Suzanne Collins was born in 1962 in Hartford, Connecticut where she currently resides with her husband and two children. Collins graduated from Indiana University, and then went on to earn her masters in fine arts in dramatic writing at New York University. After graduation, she began her career in writing children’s television. Collins is famously private about her personal life, staying off of social media; however, she has shared that she drew inspiration for her writing from her father’s military career and her own experiences raising children.

Career

Suzanne Collins began her career in children’s television, working on Nickelodeon shows like “Clarissa Explains it All” and “The Mystery Files of Shelby Woo.” Inspired by “Alice in Wonderland,” she wrote “Gregor the Overlander,” launching her bestselling series, “The Underland Chronicles.” Her “Hunger Games Trilogy” became a global phenomenon, earning her numerous honors including becoming #1 on New York Times Best Sellers list. The film adaptations broke box office records, with the franchise grossing nearly $3 billion worldwide. In 2020, Collins released a prequel novel, “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,” later adapted into a successful film in 2023.

Her books have sold over 100 million copies worldwide.
